Are the Bluejays planning on trading Bo Bichette?

As of today March 20th the Bluejays have a shortstop as their top prospect in Arjun Nimmala. They also traded for a player named Andres Gimenez who is widely considered the best defender in the game. Okay, so now imagine a world where the Jays current SS gets off to a great start. He is batting around .300 with an ops around 1.10 and fielding his ass off. Let’s also remember he is in a contract year and has had injury issues the last few seasons. Taking into account the Covid years were shortened seasons with a lot less travel etc. The last three seasons can be viewed as a players true history and/or trajectory. This would be why the Bluejays are higher on Vlad Jr. than Bo Bichette as he has a higher ceiling and overall health is better (their respective field positions may have something to do with that for sure) and therefore could have a longer, more productive career. Considering all of this, add in the fact that the farm system is…..not great…and could use a bump. A player such as BB could be a gem of a trade piece this year for a contending team and could yield a substantial return. If Gimenez has a banner year and returns to his offensive production of a few years ago, or if Nimmala takes a huge step this season (which if his spring 2025 is any indication then he may be ready to do just that) then we could see a comfortability with making that decision to improve the farm system dramatically while still remaining competitive at that position. One other factor to keep in mind is the volume of infielders the Bluejays have on roster. Players such as Davis Schneider, Ernie Clement, Leo Jimenez, Orelvis Martinez and Will Wagner are all still younger prospects trying to establish themselves and with a player such as Gimenez helping to organize the defence on field (and really who better to help teach 2nd base defence than the reigning best 2B in the game) one of them could break through and become a solid option. The more I think about it the more it makes sense to say goodbye to BB and get an absolute haul from a contender starving for that bat at the top of their order. It could right a lot of wrongs this management group has committed the last few seasons in weakening the team and system. If it was me, I would say it’s a business and you can’t get attached to every player. You have to be selective on who you fall in love with, and right now, it ain’t Bo Bichette.
